Court of Appeals suspends Galaxy Nexus injunction, upholds Tab ban

There have been some significant developments in the Samsung v. Apple patent dispute case this afternoon. The last we heard, Apple had won U.S. injunctions on both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the Galaxy Nexus, and motions to stay those orders had been denied.

Samsung’s last hope was for the Washington D.C.-based Court of Appeals to get involved, as it has jurisdiction over all IP proceedings. And it looks like it has made its decision on both cases this afternoon, ruling to uphold one ban, and suspend the other…

Reuters is reporting that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has issued an order today, rejecting Samsung’s request to immediately stay the sales ban on its Galaxy Tab 10.1. It looks like it will be forced to quit selling the tablet at least until the case has run its course.

On a more positive note, The Verge says that the the Court of Appeals has also given a ruling on the Galaxy Nexus injunction. And it’s chosen to temporarily suspend the ban.

Geohot Spotted at iOSDevCamp

Where has Geohot been lately? We know he recently joined Facebook, but has he had a presence in the iOS developer scene?
George “Geohot” Hotz has indeed been pretty quiet these days, and we’ve all thought that he’s been taking a break from his iOS work to focus on his new job at Facebook. That doesn’t seem to totally be the case, as he’s been spotted coding away at the iOSDevCamp in San Jose, CA.
The above picture was tweeted by a student iOS dev, Max Weisel, at a program called the iOSDevCamp, currently being held at the PayPal HQ. The camp is an “annual not-for-profit gathering to develop applications for iOS, including iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, using both the native SDK and web standards.
Max tweeted the above picture of Geohot coding on a MacBook Pro with the tagline, “Geohot’s learning to code all over again.”
Nice to see Geohot back in his zone. Perhaps he’s got a few things he’s working on for the jailbreak community?

Jailbreak iOS 4.3.4 With RedSn0w

The Dev Team has released an update to the jailbreak tool, RedSn0w, with support for a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.4. Apple released 4.3.4 yesterday to combat the PDF vulnerability uncovered in the latest version of JailbreakMe.
JailbreakMe users are advised to stay with the untethered jailbreak that the web-based tool provides on iOS 4.3.3, and not upgrade to 4.3.4.
“For the convenience of kernel hackers like @comex and @i0n1c, we have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2.  The vast majority of people will want to stay back at 4.3.3 because that’s where the untethered jailbreak is!There are no new features in 4.3.4 — only fixes for jailbreak exploits.
Also, this is a good time to remind everyone (since we’re still seeing confusion about this): iPad2 owners with a baseband (3G or CDMA) cannot currently use saved blobs to go back to 4.3.3 once the signing window is closed. This is unlike every other device, so don’t be confused!  iPad2 owners with basebands should stay away from all updates to maintain the jailbreak!”
You can’t jailbreak the iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.4 with RedSn0w, so stay on 4.3.3 with yourJailbreakMe untethered jailbreak. Because 4.3.4 was only released by Apple to combat the jailbreak exploit used by JailbreakMe in 4.3.3, there’s absolutely no reason for jailbreakers on 4.3.3 to update.
Apple is still currently signing 4.3.3, so make sure you backup you SHSH blobsimmediately in the event that you accidentally update or need to downgrade back to a jailbreak-compatible iOS firmware.
The untethered jailbreak through JailbreakMe is the advised jailbreaking method for users on 4.3.3. To remain secure from the PDF exploit in iOS 4.3.3, install PDF Patcher 2 in Cydia once you jailbreak with JailbreakMe.

JailbreakME.com FAQ

JailbreakMe 3.0 recently went live for all iDevices on iOS 4.3.3, and Comex’s PDF exploit is the first to successfully jailbreak the iPad 2.

Although the process of jailbreaking with JailbreakMe is incredibly easy, many of you probably still have questions concerning the userland jailbreak. The iPhone Dev Team has put together a helpful FAQ outlining the details behind JailbreakMe 3.0…

Q: Which devices and firmware versions are supported?

A: In this initial release, the following configurations are supported:

iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
iPad2: 4.3.3
iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3
Q: Do the holes discovered by @comex put my device at risk?

A: Yes. We recommend installing “PDF Patcher 2” in Cydia once you’re jailbroken to eliminate this risk (any firmware version).

Q: How does jbme3.0 differ from the existing jailbreaks?

A: jbme3.0 is entirely userland-based, from start to finish. The A5 chip in the iPad2 has no iBoot or bootrom-level exploits yet, so tools like redsn0w, PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze can’t use the limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. Even for those devices where limera1n works, jbme3.0 injects the jailbreak with a userland exploit.

Q: If I’m already jailbroken on the latest firmware, is there any advantage to jailbreaking again?

A: No, but you should consider showing this to your friends! Spread the jailbreaking fever.

Q: Are the holes exploited by jbme3.0 closed in iOS5?

A: The holes still exist in the iOS5 betas, but they’ll almost certainly be fixed by the time iOS5 is public. However because the iPad2 had no public jailbreak yet, it probably wasn’t worth waiting until the fall to use them. If history repeats itself though, there will be more holes and exploits.

Q: Will I permanently lose the jailbreak if I need to restore my device?

A: For all except the iPad2, saving your SHSH blobs should let you always restore your device to iOS versions where this jailbreak works. The iPad2 is a little more complicated. If you have a wifi-only iPad2 and saved SHSH blobs, you’re in good shape. But if you have the GSM or CDMA iPad2, you won’t be able to restore to 4.3.3 or lower once Apple stops signing its baseband. There are a few ideas that might work to get around this limitation, but for now it’s best to assume there’s no going back to 4.3.3 once 4.3.4 is out for iPad2 GSM or CDMA owners.

Q: I heard this new unionfs stuff is dangerous?

A: Define dangerous Seriously though, although unionfs is a huge improvement to the install time of the jailbreak, it is brand new code and there is the possibility something will go wrong. Just keep regular backups of your media and content and you should be fine. If there are any problems, they should appear within the first few days, so hold off and let “everyone else” test the waters if you’d like.

Comex also answered a pressing question about JailbreakMe’s PDF exploit:

Q: Isn’t there a risk hackers will make the exploit from this site into an iPhone virus?

A: When I released JailbreakMe 2.0 last year, some media reports focused on the security implications of releasing an exploit for unpatched vulnerabilities. I am not sure myself what to think of this, but here are some facts:

I did not create the vulnerabilities, only discover them. Releasing an exploit demonstrates the flaw, making it easier for others to use it for malice, but they have long been present and exploitable. Although releasing a jailbreak is certainly not the usual way to report a vulnerability, it still has the effect of making iOS more secure in the long run.
There’s always a first time, but I think there’s a good chance the security impact of these vulnerabilities will remain theoretical. Despite JailbreakMe 2.0 being open sourced after an updated version of iOS was released, which would have made it relatively easy to modify the code into an attack, I didn’t hear about any such modification except a proof of concept that showed up much later. The only iPhone virus ever to attack the general public was a trivial one that affected jailbreakers who installed OpenSSH (not installed by default) but left it at the default password.
Along with the jailbreak, I am releasing a patch for the main vulnerability which anyone especially security conscious can install to render themselves immune; due to the nature of iOS, this patch can only be installed on a jailbroken device. Until Apple releases an update, jailbreaking will ironically be the best way to remain secure.
Jailbreak apps and tweaks improve the mobile experience of millions of users, including many who were encourged to try it by the ease of use of web-based jailbreaks. I’m not just doing this to be flashy: there is considerable benefit to writing this kind of tool rather than one that requires a connected computer.”

JailbreakME.com

With over 500,000 iDevices jailbroken with JailbreakMe Saffron since last night, can you imagine if Comex made $1 for each of these devices? Yes, he’d probably be flying first class to some Caribbean island by now.

But let’s be realistic, not everyone would want to pay for a jailbreak, even if it was as low as one dollar. Truth is, most people probably don’t even know they can donate to Comex, which is why we thought it was our duty to let everyone know about that…

If you used JailbreakMe to jailbreak one or more of your devices, the right thing to do would be to make a small donation to Comex. He’s been working on this jailbreak for almost a year and probably spent hundreds of hours on it. The least we can do is to give a little financial support. Anything helps: $0.10, $0.50, $1, $10. Give whatever you can.

Not only this will be a much deserved reward, but that will most likely encourage Comex to keep working on those exploits.

Dual-Boot Custom PS3 Firmware On The Horizon

PS3 hacking is a big deal these days. Everyone at it. Well, maybe not everyone but it seems to be growing in popularity with each passing day and Sony has helped it grow by removing the Linux install option from its PS3 software. Now hackers are working on giving users the option of choosing what OS they wish to boot into when they switch their PS3s on – dual-booting tocoin an old PC phrase.
So what’s the deal? New PS3 hacking king Kmeaw says he may look into building a dual-boot feature – so long as there’s demand for it.
I was thinking of a CFW that has bootOS integrated so it gets executed when you power on your PS3 (and switches back to GameOS on user’s request via menu or ssh). It’s not hard to make it.
But recently I read graf’s announcement that he is going to accomplish the same task. So I don’t know, if such CFW from me would get any demand.
Also I got bootos-installer and lv2patcher patches from an anonymous hacker who have added 3.15/3.41 support. I’m going to merge them into my code and release the next version.
If you have any ideas about what would you like to have, please tell me.
Kmeaw’s claim to fame is his release of a custom PS3 3.55 firmware which comes complete with all the jailbreak patches a budding hacker’s heart could desire. If you were doubting the guy’s ability to pull something like this off, don’t.
Hopefully Kmeaw’s past release of all singing all dancing firmwares bodes well for a user-friendly dual-boot feature at some point in the future.

Untether for iOS 4.3.1 Jailbreak is Available If You Can Crack the Password

untether for the iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak but you'll have to be able to crack the zip password to access it.

Some people still did not get that the untether.zip "leak" was intentional. Have fun bruteforcing a 30 character AES password.

Ehmm it is a simple ZIP file with AES encryption. winzip / 7z support that.

The untether is downloadable at http://antid0te.com/untether.zip (but only if you can crack the ZIP password)

The problem is: I forgot the password.

It is only mean if you are really so desperate that you cannot wait for the dev-team to release redsn0w with it.

So as I0n1c says, if you know what you are doing and absolutely can't wait till the Dev-Team releases their jailbreak then you can download and crack the untether for your own use.

Apple Blocks Jailbreak App Store Cydia In Its Stores

Apple is taking an unusual step in the war again jailbreakers, and it’s not what you may think.
In the past, Apple has tried blocking jailbreakers by changing how iOS handles memory and has made changes to its mobile iOS in general many times. Now though they’re just trying to make life difficult even after you’ve jailbroken.
Cydia
iPhoneDownloadBlog brings news that when attempting to access jailbreak App Store Cydia using an Apple Store’s WiFi, users are now finding the app loading Apple’s own website instead of the expected jailbreak goodness.
Of course this isn’t going to make the slightest bit of difference to the hardcore jailbreak community, but it’s interesting to see that Apple has taken these steps at all. By the time someone with a jailbroken iDevice access a WiFi hotspot, it’s a bit late to be trying to prove a point!
You go Apple, you sure told the jailbreakers there!

Geohot And Lawyers Claim Sony Is Misleading The Courts

When George ‘Geohot’ Hotz first starting jailbreaking the Sony PlayStation 3, we’re sure the hacker didn’t expect the circus that now surrounds both him and the civil lawsuit brought by Sony.
PS3
The latest installment of this never-ending drama brings news from Ars Technica that Geohot and his lawyers believe Japanese giant Sony is misleading the courts in their quest to ensure proceedings continue in their home-town of San Francisco and not where Hotz resides.
Sony insists that Hotz agreed to the terms of using the Sony SDK, which is in turn linked to Sony’s US offices in California. The link? Sony’s US offices are named as the place to look to for SDK support. A bit of a stretch, no?
After receiving permission from a Judge, Sony will also be looking through Geohot’s computer hard drives along with his PayPal dealings in the hope they can link the hacker to California.
Sony is also dragging its heels when it comes to providing a copy of the PS3 SDK to lawyers, insisting that they must visit Sony to see it – and only then under an NDA:
Trying to lock this down may be trickier than it seems. Hotz’s lawyers would like a copy of the SDK to look through to determine the exact wording included, while Sony is trying to limit access to the SDK by arguing that the lawyers can only see it under NDA, at Sony’s offices. Moreover, Sony is arguing that they should be able to look through the entirety of Hotz’ hard drives and search his e-mail looking for evidence of communication with parties in California.
Many are now starting to lose patience with Sony’s persistence in trying to link the case with California, with no sign yet as to an end to the madness.

Browser Wars: “Flawed” Study Shows Android Surfs Web 52% Faster Than iPhone 4 On iOS 4.3

It’s fast becoming the measure smartphone manufacturers and OS developers use to convey how fast their products are, and now one Canadian firm has taken Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android through 45,000 tests to see just who has the fastest web browsing experience.
Blaze Software Inc is a Canadian outfit dedicated to improving browsing speeds and they were kind enough to run us through some of their testing to see who rendered websites the fastest – Android or iOS. Unfortunately though, the study was found to be flawed.
What Blaze did was that they created their own testing software based on Apple’s UIWebView and Google’s WebView. The tests were performed on an iPhone 4 (running both iOS 4.3 and 4.2) and Samsung Nexus S (running Android 2.3) while a Samsung Galaxy S was used for testing Android 2.2.
All the websites tested were those of Fortune 1000 companies with each site being tested 3 times, with a median result used.
Over 45,000 tests were run across the various platforms and operating system versions, with the results indicating that recent JavaScript handling improvements on both platforms don’t translate to real-world speed increases.
After taking over 45,000 measurements on the latest iPhone and Android devices, the study found that Android was 52% faster than iPhone on average. Android finished loading a Web page faster on 84% of the 1000 Websites tested. The study also found that the despite significant JavaScriptperformance gains in the latest Apple iOS 4.3 release and Google Android 2.3 releases, these improvement made no measurable improvement on the actual page load times of the sites tested.
Study proved Google’s OS to be faster than iOS in 84% of tests. Average load-times were also measured, with Android’s speed showing through with an average time of 2.1 seconds compared to the average 3.2 seconds required by iOS’ Safari.
Blaze also made the tools used available to the public via its website. Here users can test any site they like, using various Android and iOS versions to see how their site runs.
The full Blaze press release is attached below:
Ottawa, ON, March 17, 2011 – Blaze Software Inc released today the largest ever research study of smart phone browser performance. The purpose of the study was to determine once and for all which of the two leading smart phone vendors has the fastest browser.

Mobile Web browser usage is exploding. Emarketer estimates that 44.1% of US citizens will leverage mobile Internet by 2014. To capture market interest in mobile browsing, smart phone vendors have been aggressively touting the speed improvements in their products. However, due to the lack of mobile measurement tools, it has been difficult to measure which smart phone actually has the faster browser.

After taking over 45,000 measurements on the latest iPhone and Android devices, the study found that Android was 52% faster than iPhone on average. Android finished loading a Web page faster on 84% of the 1000 Websites tested. The study also found that the despite significant JavaScript performance gains in the latest Apple iOS 4.3 release and Google Android 2.3 releases, these improvement made no measurable improvement on the actual page load times of the sites tested.

“We were very surprised by the results”, said Guy Podjarny, Blaze CTO and Co-Founder. “We assumed that it would be closer race and that the latest JavaScript speed improvements would have a more material impact on performance. The fact that Android beat iPhone by such a large margin was not expected”.

What makes this study unique is the size of the study and the fact that it used real phones on real world websites to make the measurements. Past studies have often used fabricated benchmark sites or manual measurements on a small number of sites. This study was made possible through custom apps developed to measure page load time on mobile devices. These apps run on the actual devices, load a page on demand, and measure how long it took. These agents are available as a free service to measure any site with the Blaze Mobitest Tool.

Detailed blog post on the Blaze Mobile Measurement Study For more information on the details results and methodology of the study, please see: www.blaze.io/blog

About Blaze Blaze was founded in 2010 with a mission to help clients deliver better performing Web businesses by optimizing websites to increase website speed. *This report is based on our own analysis leveraging the technology and methodology outlined in this report.  Blaze Software Inc. is in no way affiliated with Google or Apple.
How is it flawed you may ask? The Loop explains:
One of the biggest surprises the Blaze team found was that “despite significant JavaScript performance gains in the latest Apple iOS 4.3 release and Google Android 2.3 releases, these improvement made no measurable improvement on the actual page load times of the sites tested.”
There is a good reason for this. According to Blaze’s own documentation the “measurement itself was done using the custom apps which use the platform’s embedded browser. This means WebView (based on Chrome) for Android, and UIWebView (based on Safari) for iPhone.”
The problem with using UIWebView is that, even though it’s based on Safari, it didn’t receive any of the updates that Safari did in iOS 4.3. Using an embedded browser is not the same as using the official browser.
Apple’s Safari Web browser included the Nitro JavaScript engine that Apple said runs JavaScript up to twice as fast as its predecessor. Since UIWebView didn’t include any of those enhancements, it’s kind of disingenuous to say that Android beat Safari.
Apple also officially responded to the tests, saying:
Their testing is flawed because they didn’t actually test the Safari web browser on the iPhone. Instead they only tested their own proprietary app which uses an embedded web viewer that doesn’t take advantage of Safari’s web performance optimizations. Despite this fundamental testing flaw, they still only found an average of a second difference in loading web pages.

iPhone Tops J.D. Power 2011 Customer Smartphone Satisfaction Survey

It’s J.D.Power survey time once again, and as is becoming the norm Apple’s iPhone has come out top, voted by users as the handset they are most satisfied with.
As 9to5Mac reports, Apple came out top ahead of competitors Motorola and HTC, with RIM’s BlackBerry being ranked last.
The categories the J.D.Power judges look at are:
Operation (30%); physical design (30%); features (20%); and battery function (20%). For smartphones, the key factors are: ease of operation (26%); operating system (24%); physical design (23%); features (19%); and battery function (8%).
The iPhone’s design, ease of use and iOS operating system received special mention in the survey results.

Windows 8 Milestone 2 Build Enters Final Stages, First Beta Scheduled for Summer this Year

Microsoft’s next major release of its Windows operating system is one step nearer to its first beta release, according to site WinRumors.
WinRumors claims that Microsoft’s Windows 8 second Milestone build has been finalized, with Milestone 3 the next to be worked on. After that stage it’s only a matter of time before we see a beta of Windows 8 in testing, with WinRumors speculating that could come as early as this Summer.
Microsoft compiled 6.2.7947.0.winmain_win8m2_escrow.110218-1608 on Friday after pushing out a number of Windows 8 builds recently. Things are moving along nicely behind closed doors, and versions of the OS will soon be allowed out to Microsoft’s trusted partners for testing. Some of the recent Windows 8 builds which were compiled in the last couple of weeks were:
6.2.7925.0.winmain_win8m2.110207-1736
6.2.7926.0.winmain_win8m2.110209-1755
6.2.7927.0.winmain_win8m2.110210-1740
6.2.7928.0.winmain_win8m2.110214-1825
6.2.7929.0.winmain_win8m2.110215-1802
6.2.7930.0.winmain_win8m2.110217-1825
With Microsoft working on an ARM-compatible version of Windows, it is possible that this could be the version first to testing, with the full desktop experience coming later. With recent leaks pointing toward a version of Windows 8 being ready for future tablets in early 2012, it’s clear that there is no time to waste for the Redmond outfit, especially if they hope to take on Apple and Google in the rapidly expanding tablet market.
Little is really known about Windows 8, though a more cloud-centric OS is expected especially considering the focus on tablets and other machines with no conventional disk drive. Microsoft is keeping its cards close to its chest thus far, though it’s clear the company sees Windows 8 as a pivotal software release, heaping more pressure on an already creaking development team. Still stung from the Vista debacle, MS will be hoping Windows 8 can build on the good faith the 7th installment of the OS managed to return.

How to Save Facebook Photos to Your iPhone Camera Roll Using the Official Facebook for iPhone App [Jailbreak Tweak

One of the features missing from the official Facebook for iPhone app is the ability to save to your Facebook photos to iPhone’s camera roll. But fortunately, there is now a new iPhone tweak available on Cydia which enables you to save any photo from the Facebook app right into camera roll.

Available by the name of FBPhotoSave, this tweak allows you to save photos by using simple gestures. All you have to do is to tap and hold the picture which you want to save until it prompts you to save it to the camera roll, as also illustrated by the screenshots below.
You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install it.

FBPhotoSave can be downloaded from Cydia under ModMyi repository for $0.99 .
