Court of Appeals suspends Galaxy Nexus injunction, upholds Tab ban
There have been some significant developments in the Samsung v. Apple patent dispute case this afternoon. The last we heard, Apple had won U.S. injunctions on both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and the Galaxy Nexus, and motions to stay those orders had been denied.
Samsung’s last hope was for the Washington D.C.-based Court of Appeals to get involved, as it has jurisdiction over all IP proceedings. And it looks like it has made its decision on both cases this afternoon, ruling to uphold one ban, and suspend the other…
Reuters is reporting that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has issued an order today, rejecting Samsung’s request to immediately stay the sales ban on its Galaxy Tab 10.1. It looks like it will be forced to quit selling the tablet at least until the case has run its course.
On a more positive note, The Verge says that the the Court of Appeals has also given a ruling on the Galaxy Nexus injunction. And it’s chosen to temporarily suspend the ban.

Geohot Spotted at iOSDevCamp
Where has Geohot been lately? We know he recently joined Facebook, but has he had a presence in the iOS developer scene?
George “Geohot” Hotz has indeed been pretty quiet these days, and we’ve all thought that he’s been taking a break from his iOS work to focus on his new job at Facebook. That doesn’t seem to totally be the case, as he’s been spotted coding away at the iOSDevCamp in San Jose, CA.
The above picture was tweeted by a student iOS dev, Max Weisel, at a program called the iOSDevCamp, currently being held at the PayPal HQ. The camp is an “annual not-for-profit gathering to develop applications for iOS, including iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, using both the native SDK and web standards.”

Max tweeted the above picture of Geohot coding on a MacBook Pro with the tagline, “Geohot’s learning to code all over again.”
Nice to see Geohot back in his zone. Perhaps he’s got a few things he’s working on for the jailbreak community?
Jailbreak iOS 4.3.4 With RedSn0w
The Dev Team has released an update to the jailbreak tool, RedSn0w, with support for a tethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3.4. Apple released 4.3.4 yesterday to combat the PDF vulnerability uncovered in the latest version of JailbreakMe.
JailbreakMe users are advised to stay with the untethered jailbreak that the web-based tool provides on iOS 4.3.3, and not upgrade to 4.3.4.
“For the convenience of kernel hackers like @comex and @i0n1c, we have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2. The vast majority of people will want to stay back at 4.3.3 because that’s where the untethered jailbreak is!There are no new features in 4.3.4 — only fixes for jailbreak exploits. Also, this is a good time to remind everyone (since we’re still seeing confusion about this): iPad2 owners with a baseband (3G or CDMA) cannot currently use saved blobs to go back to 4.3.3 once the signing window is closed. This is unlike every other device, so don’t be confused! iPad2 owners with basebands should stay away from all updates to maintain the jailbreak!”
You can’t jailbreak the iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.4 with RedSn0w, so stay on 4.3.3 with yourJailbreakMe untethered jailbreak. Because 4.3.4 was only released by Apple to combat the jailbreak exploit used by JailbreakMe in 4.3.3, there’s absolutely no reason for jailbreakers on 4.3.3 to update.
Apple is still currently signing 4.3.3, so make sure you backup you SHSH blobsimmediately in the event that you accidentally update or need to downgrade back to a jailbreak-compatible iOS firmware.
The untethered jailbreak through JailbreakMe is the advised jailbreaking method for users on 4.3.3. To remain secure from the PDF exploit in iOS 4.3.3, install PDF Patcher 2 in Cydia once you jailbreak with JailbreakMe.
JailbreakME.com FAQ
JailbreakMe 3.0 recently went live for all iDevices on iOS 4.3.3, and Comex’s PDF exploit is the first to successfully jailbreak the iPad 2.
Although the process of jailbreaking with JailbreakMe is incredibly easy, many of you probably still have questions concerning the userland jailbreak. The iPhone Dev Team has put together a helpful FAQ outlining the details behind JailbreakMe 3.0…
Q: Which devices and firmware versions are supported?
A: In this initial release, the following configurations are supported:
iPad1: 4.3 through 4.3.3
iPad2: 4.3.3
iPhone3GS: 4.3 through 4.3.3
iPhone4: 4.3 through 4.3.3
iPhone4-CDMA: 4.2.6 through 4.2.8
iPod touch 3g: 4.3, 4.3.2, 4.3.3
iPod touch 4g: 4.3 through 4.3.3
Q: Do the holes discovered by @comex put my device at risk?
A: Yes. We recommend installing “PDF Patcher 2” in Cydia once you’re jailbroken to eliminate this risk (any firmware version).
Q: How does jbme3.0 differ from the existing jailbreaks?
A: jbme3.0 is entirely userland-based, from start to finish. The A5 chip in the iPad2 has no iBoot or bootrom-level exploits yet, so tools like redsn0w, PwnageTool and sn0wbreeze can’t use the limera1n bootrom exploit to inject the jailbreak. Even for those devices where limera1n works, jbme3.0 injects the jailbreak with a userland exploit.
Q: If I’m already jailbroken on the latest firmware, is there any advantage to jailbreaking again?
A: No, but you should consider showing this to your friends! Spread the jailbreaking fever.
Q: Are the holes exploited by jbme3.0 closed in iOS5?
A: The holes still exist in the iOS5 betas, but they’ll almost certainly be fixed by the time iOS5 is public. However because the iPad2 had no public jailbreak yet, it probably wasn’t worth waiting until the fall to use them. If history repeats itself though, there will be more holes and exploits.
Q: Will I permanently lose the jailbreak if I need to restore my device?
A: For all except the iPad2, saving your SHSH blobs should let you always restore your device to iOS versions where this jailbreak works. The iPad2 is a little more complicated. If you have a wifi-only iPad2 and saved SHSH blobs, you’re in good shape. But if you have the GSM or CDMA iPad2, you won’t be able to restore to 4.3.3 or lower once Apple stops signing its baseband. There are a few ideas that might work to get around this limitation, but for now it’s best to assume there’s no going back to 4.3.3 once 4.3.4 is out for iPad2 GSM or CDMA owners.
Q: I heard this new unionfs stuff is dangerous?
A: Define dangerous Seriously though, although unionfs is a huge improvement to the install time of the jailbreak, it is brand new code and there is the possibility something will go wrong. Just keep regular backups of your media and content and you should be fine. If there are any problems, they should appear within the first few days, so hold off and let “everyone else” test the waters if you’d like.
Comex also answered a pressing question about JailbreakMe’s PDF exploit:
Q: Isn’t there a risk hackers will make the exploit from this site into an iPhone virus?
A: When I released JailbreakMe 2.0 last year, some media reports focused on the security implications of releasing an exploit for unpatched vulnerabilities. I am not sure myself what to think of this, but here are some facts:
I did not create the vulnerabilities, only discover them. Releasing an exploit demonstrates the flaw, making it easier for others to use it for malice, but they have long been present and exploitable. Although releasing a jailbreak is certainly not the usual way to report a vulnerability, it still has the effect of making iOS more secure in the long run.
There’s always a first time, but I think there’s a good chance the security impact of these vulnerabilities will remain theoretical. Despite JailbreakMe 2.0 being open sourced after an updated version of iOS was released, which would have made it relatively easy to modify the code into an attack, I didn’t hear about any such modification except a proof of concept that showed up much later. The only iPhone virus ever to attack the general public was a trivial one that affected jailbreakers who installed OpenSSH (not installed by default) but left it at the default password.
Along with the jailbreak, I am releasing a patch for the main vulnerability which anyone especially security conscious can install to render themselves immune; due to the nature of iOS, this patch can only be installed on a jailbroken device. Until Apple releases an update, jailbreaking will ironically be the best way to remain secure.
Jailbreak apps and tweaks improve the mobile experience of millions of users, including many who were encourged to try it by the ease of use of web-based jailbreaks. I’m not just doing this to be flashy: there is considerable benefit to writing this kind of tool rather than one that requires a connected computer.”

With over 500,000 iDevices jailbroken with JailbreakMe Saffron since last night, can you imagine if Comex made $1 for each of these devices? Yes, he’d probably be flying first class to some Caribbean island by now.
But let’s be realistic, not everyone would want to pay for a jailbreak, even if it was as low as one dollar. Truth is, most people probably don’t even know they can donate to Comex, which is why we thought it was our duty to let everyone know about that…
If you used JailbreakMe to jailbreak one or more of your devices, the right thing to do would be to make a small donation to Comex. He’s been working on this jailbreak for almost a year and probably spent hundreds of hours on it. The least we can do is to give a little financial support. Anything helps: $0.10, $0.50, $1, $10. Give whatever you can.
Not only this will be a much deserved reward, but that will most likely encourage Comex to keep working on those exploits.

Dual-Boot Custom PS3 Firmware On The Horizon
PS3 hacking is a big deal these days. Everyone at it. Well, maybe not everyone but it seems to be growing in popularity with each passing day and Sony has helped it grow by removing the Linux install option from its PS3 software. Now hackers are working on giving users the option of choosing what OS they wish to boot into when they switch their PS3s on – dual-booting tocoin an old PC phrase.

So what’s the deal? New PS3 hacking king Kmeaw says he may look into building a dual-boot feature – so long as there’s demand for it.
I was thinking of a CFW that has bootOS integrated so it gets executed when you power on your PS3 (and switches back to GameOS on user’s request via menu or ssh). It’s not hard to make it.
But recently I read graf’s announcement that he is going to accomplish the same task. So I don’t know, if such CFW from me would get any demand.
Also I got bootos-installer and lv2patcher patches from an anonymous hacker who have added 3.15/3.41 support. I’m going to merge them into my code and release the next version.
If you have any ideas about what would you like to have, please tell me.
Kmeaw’s claim to fame is his release of a custom PS3 3.55 firmware which comes complete with all the jailbreak patches a budding hacker’s heart could desire. If you were doubting the guy’s ability to pull something like this off, don’t.
Hopefully Kmeaw’s past release of all singing all dancing firmwares bodes well for a user-friendly dual-boot feature at some point in the future.
